Settling In at Otago Childcare Centre
We understand that entering an early childhood setting is a significant transition for both you and your child. Separation anxiety is common during this stage, as tamariki navigate a new environment, routines, and faces.
At Otago Childcare Centre (OCC), we are here to make this process as smooth and supportive as possible.
Supporting the Transition
We encourage you to visit the Centre as many times as you can before your child officially starts. These visits allow you and your child to:

• Get to know our staff (kaiako) and other children.
• Become familiar with the daily routines.
• Explore the learning opportunities we offer in a relaxed and supportive setting.

Once your child begins attending, you are welcome to call the Centre as often as you need to check in. We’re here to provide reassurance and updates during this transition.
Settling-In Visits
To help ease your child into the Centre, we suggest the following approach:

1. Begin with a couple of short visits where you stay with your child.
2. Gradually transition to leaving your child for about half an hour during subsequent visits.
3. Increase the time until your child is comfortable staying for a full session.

​There are no fees charged for settling-in visits, as we believe this process is essential to ensuring your child feels secure and happy in their new environment.
